Though tough to quantify, it seems as though Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace may have been the most anticipated film ever. The enduring passion extended another two years when Lucas began releasing a new trio of prequels that preceded his iconic trilogy. Only seven new films released that year pulled in more at the North American box office than the original Star Wars. When creator George Lucas reissued the three movies in theaters with tweaks and additions as Special Editions in early 1997, each opened in first place and added significantly to their already substantial returns. Though ostensibly dormant for the next decade and a half, the Star Wars trilogy remained insanely popular through rampant, repeat home video viewings. Its two sequels, released over the next six years, were not as profitable, but still earned more than twice as much as any other film from their years. The original 1977 film redefined the word "blockbuster" with a gross above and beyond anything previously heard of.

Even the people who you don't see in the movie - the puppeteers who were painted out, I watched them in 125-degree heat in Abu Dhabi bringing BB-8 to life, and then we mercilessly painted them out in the movie. I'm just so happy that all the work that everyone did. It was three years of very tense work by a lot of people. I just want to apologize to, I'm guessing, their parents. Abrams has said a number of things were cut at the last minute. No other deleted scenes have been revealed yet, but J.J. Unlike the original trilogy and the prequel trilogy, which have been constantly updated and given a CGI facelift by creator George Lucas, it doesn't sound like J.J. Probably, if it were with credits, close to two hours and 50 minutes was the first cut." Abrams was asked what the longest cut of the film was before he edited it down to 2 hours and 16 minutes for the theatrical release. And anyone who has traipsed through a toy store lately has noticed action figures for characters that aren't in the movie, such as Constable Zuvio and Goss Towers, both of whom wound up on the cutting room floor.
Just from the trailers released before the movie, we know that there are a number of moments that didn't make it into this long awaited sequel, including a scene at Resistance Headquarters, where Maz Kanata gives Princess Leia Luke's old lightsaber. "There will be deleted scenes, but not an extended version. Abrams confirmed the news with Entertainment Weekly, hinting at what we can expect to see in just a few months.
